About usHigh Sheriff of Tyne and Wear 2006/07, Marj Barton, provided the inspiration for what we are working on today. As part of her commitment to music and education, she encouraged a group of friends and general enthusiasts to put together a production of Noye's Fludde by composer Benjamin Britten. It was performed in Sunderland Minster in February 2007.
We are now a registered charity and committed to what we here at Music in the Minster are passionate about – encouraging everyone to appreciate music. We organise our own events and projects, finding experts from the world of opera and bringing them to share their skills with people on Wearside, working with existing groups in the area where appropriate to present performances and events. Our artistic director Alison Barton (www.alisonbarton.org.uk) works with a committee of volunteers to do all this. We are also extremely pleased to have Sir Thomas Allen as our patron. Sir Tom grew up in Seaham and has gone on to become one of the world's most famous opera singers. Whatever age you are, whatever you're into, we want to get you involved in all kinds of music-making. As a result it was clear that there was a definite appetite in Sunderland for an organisation that was flexible enough to take on music and education projects, but permanent enough to plan for the future, and with the capability to produce high quality original performances on Wearside.
